DANGER DETECTION: Undercover Colors sounds like it’s cooking up an Awesome melange of fashion, technology and personal security for women to compliment an already thriving market for date rape drug detection and avoidance contrivances. We hope their efforts will boost awareness and encourage women to use all the tools at their disposal to detect,  deflect and avoid the circumstances that lead to personal compromise, date rape or worse.

INTELLIGENT PAINT: Soon your nail polish could tell you if your drink contains date rape drugs. Unfortunately, it won’t be able to discern who put the drug in your drink.

NOT READY FOR PRIME TIME: Theoretically, the nail polish which is at the earliest stages of development (a.k.a. concept, planning or prototyping) would change color when it comes in contact with any date rape drug. It is not yet known if the polish would detect ALL so-called date rape drug chemical compounds, but the goal is to formulate it so that it would. Once developed, all a woman need do is dip her polish-covered fingernail into her drink to test it for drugs.

FASHION STATEMENT: The group of students has hailed it “Undercover Colors,” and the idea is creating quite a social buzz already. The group is self-described as “first fashion company working to prevent sexual assault.” There are a few companies out there that might have issues with that declaration, but we get the idea.

FOILING THE CREEPS: Our goal is to “invent technologies that empower women to protect themselves from this heinous and quietly pervasive crime. Though this nail polish and similar technologies, we hope to make potential perpetrators afraid to spike a woman’s drink because there’s now a risk that they can get caught.”

DISCLAIMER: While this is definitely a novel approach at combating the burgeoning problem of date rape, it is just one piece of a overall more comprehensive arsenal of personal protection measures and equipment. It is vitally important to be aware of and be prepared to combat the multitude of methods, techniques and circumstances that could be used to compromise a person’s judgment, inhibitions, physical strength or consciousness.

BuzzFeed: “I love this so much. I hate that a product like this is necessary in our society, but it is, and I’m glad that it exists. And I love that this was created by 4 MEN. It’s always so awesome to see men standing up for women’s issues, particularly ones regarding assault and safety. Always makes my heart smile. Thanks, guys, for creating this. This could impact so many lives. You guys are awesome. Keep doing what you’re doing and being innovative and helpful to others. God Bless! ” – Amber Albrektsen

IFL Science: “Nifty idea, but one that can be solved much easier: keep an eye on your drink at all times. It never ceases to amaze me that having known a random woman only a few minutes, how casually she’ll ask me to watch her drink when she runs off to the restroom or smoking or whatnot.” – jefnvk
